VOMTC serves 95% of Sonoma Valley’s at-risk youth, 90% of which are low-income, Hispanic teens; our current enrollment is almost 350 youth and range in age between 13 and 18 years old. We primarily focus on the following: counseling for teens and their families, weekly Girls and Boys Circles: gang prevention and intervention; life skills classes and presentations; educational field trips; a computer lab with complete homework help and English as a Second Language tutoring; a fully equipped gym with an outdoor basketball court; and nightly dinners prepared by teens. We also offer classes in ceramics, jewelry making, and college-level art instruction. In order to facilitate our members’ transition into adulthood, we are developing vocational training/apprenticeship programs.
For the past 21 years the Sonoma Ecology Center has worked diligently to preserve the ecological health of Sonoma Valley through its education, restoration, and research programs. SEC offers services to visitors and locals alike, engaging 6,000 community members and tourists annually. Current research projects include steelhead habitat monitoring, historical ecology, and water quality research. Working closely with landowners and concerned citizens, the restoration department focuses on habitat enhancement, restoration of riparian areas, and non-native species management. SEC also helps to manage local preserves and parks such as the Sonoma Garden Park, the Nathanson Creek Preserve and Trailway, and the Sonoma Overlook Trail. To ensure the sustainability of these projects, SEC’s education program offers community education workshops and hikes to adults as well as comprehensive science education to over 1,000 K-12 students annually.
