Soil Born Farms Urban Agriculture Project (SBFUAP) is a non-profit farm and education center located in Sacramento, CA. In 2004 the project evolved out of a small for-profit certified organic farm that began operating in Sacramento seven years ago. Our project now totals over forty acres and encompasses two urban certified organic farms. From these farms we focus on improving personal and community health through innovative outdoor programs that help youth and adults better understand theconnections between our food, our health and the environment. Our primary program areas can be summarized as follows:
1. Education: Our primary education program has evolved into what we call “Youth Corps.” Youth Corps engages youth ages 13-18 in hands-on service programs based out of our organic farms. Youth engage in a broad array of outdoor activities including: growing, packing, and distributing healthy organic food; Environmental education and habitat restoration; Healthy cooking; and general life and leadership skills development.
2. Organic Food Production: We teach ecologically sound farming practices and produce fresh organic food for sale and distribution to farmer direct outlets that we have developed including family food boxes, community produce stands, and a farmers market. We also offer produce to local restaurants, stores, food banks, and churches.
3. Food Access for All: We develop innovative strategies to get healthy food directly from the farm to our underserved residents. The food access program responds to an existing disparity within our low income communities where access to healthy, fresh and affordable food is in short supply or unavailable.
