Oakland Food Connection

Oakland Food Connection was founded two years ago by East Oakland native and food justice activist Jason Harvey as a community-based non-profit organization seeking to empower Oakland’s youth to create a local food system.

OFC seeks to develop environmental stewardship in low-income youth through its high school gardening and cooking program.  Low-income youth of color often do not have access to the environmental amenities enjoyed by affluent community members, a disparity that OFC addresses through the productive cultivation of urban green space.  Food is one of the most immediate ways that urban dwellers connect to their physical environment.

  • 2007 Catalyst Fund

$10,000 towards the continuation and expansion of operating a successful garden and cooking program in a predominantly low-income and racially diverse public high school.
