Phat Beets is a volunteer community organization that is grounded in food justice and based in North Oakland. We see access to affordable, healthy, fresh foods as a human right. We choose to focus our efforts on empowering youth, specifically targeting those at greatest risk of diet related disease. We believe the best way for fresh fruits and vegetables to become a part of the daily diet of a family is through the stomachs of our youth.
Our Programs:
1) SMDP Produce Stand- A weekly youth-operated produce stand and cooking demonstration at a local North Oakland Elementary School, focused on providing quality education to low-income students of the Oakland Flatlands.
2) Healthy Hearts Farmers’ Market- A small certified farmers’ market at the Children’s Hospital Oakland in partnership with the Healthy Hearts (obesity) Clinic that hosts cooking demonstrations and accepts food stamps and “Carrot Cash” vouchers.
3) Healthy Hearts Youth Market Garden- A 5,000 square foot garden being created at a park adjacent to the Children’s Hospital Oakland. This garden will be designed, implemented and run by teen participants in the Healthy Hearts Clinic.
