Growing Up Wild accomplishes its mission by implementing three programs:
* Family camps for families with children.
Held at our outdoor camp facility, our family camp program builds community among diverse families by providing overnight group camping experiences to children, ages 12 and under, and their parents. Using a co-op program model, parents play an active role in helping run the program. For example, they provide input on the food menu and work together to prepare meals. Program staff plans and provides hands-on environmental education activities and leads group campfires which include skits, storytelling, sing-alongs, and more.
* Camping and backpacking trips for youth.
Our camping and backpacking program for youth, ages 10 and up, takes diverse groups of youth on trips throughout Central and Northern California. Camping trips are geared for younger age-groups and take place at our outdoor camp facility and public campground sites. Our backpacking trips vary in difficulty level and begin at our outdoor camp facility where we prepare for the trip then travel to public wilderness areas throughout the region.
* A Rites of Passage Program for Teen Boys.
The Rites of Passage Program for Teen Boys is a coming-of-age program that provides extensive wilderness experiences to small groups of youth. Groups engage in four separate weekends of educational outdoor experiences over a three-month period. The first three weekends consist of activities that foster personal growth, social skills, and environmental awareness. The last weekend consists of a backpacking trip. Growing Up Wild is in the process of developing advanced levels for this program.
