Downtown High School’s Get Out & Learn

Since 2003, GetOutAndLearn has offered an academic alternative to students who are chronically truant from San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) high schools. Today, GetOutAndLearn is housed at Downtown Continuation High School and is a semester-long program serving nearly 50 youth each year.

  • 2011 Catalyst Fund

    Downtown High School Get out and Learn (GOAL) (San Francisco) Downtown High School was awarded $14,000 to help students transform their academic and social potential through a ten-day wilderness expedition and local sailing and wooden boatbuilding experiences.

  • 2010 Catalyst Fund

    $10,000 to support Get Out and Learn’s (GO&L) cornerstone ten-day wilderness expedition. GOAL is a year-round self-contained classroom, providing consistent teacher involvement coupled with greater student accountability, both academically and personally.

  • 2007 Impact Fund

    $35,000 toward the GetOut&Learn project, which is an alternative, experiential high school program that uses hands-on learning and the outdoors to re-engage SF youth in the education process.

  • 2006 Small Fund

    $17,000 - To continue the wilderness expedition program, a cornerstone experience that teaches responsibility, perseverance and natural consequences to students.
