Boy and Girls Club of San Francisco (BGCSF manages nine Clubhouses across the city of San Francisco, opening our doors to over 14,000 young people each year. At every Club, we provide youth and teens with a safe place to learn and grow; ongoing relationships with caring adult professionals; life-enhancing programs; and character development experiences. Boys & Girls Clubs was established in San Francisco in 1891 with our first Clubhouse on Folsom Street.
Over the last 120 years, the agency has continued to serve some of the most challenging and under-served neighborhoods in the city: Inner Mission, Outer Mission, Haight/Western Addition, Excelsior, Bayview/Hunters Point, Sunnydale, Tenderloin, Treasure Island and Visitacion Valley. Our core programs - Character and Leadership Development, Education and Career Development, Health and Life Skills, the Arts, and Sports, Fitness and Recreation - have served as pillars in our successful youth development strategy for several decades.
Each Clubhouse offers programs and activities that address the educational, social, and behavioral needs of their members. These include: group and individual tutoring, college prep courses, case management and individual therapy, health classes and cooking programs, a wide variety of art programming, sports leagues and games, violence prevention workshops, mentoring, and citywide collaborations with local agencies. BGCSF also owns and operates Camp Mendocino, a residential camp located on 2,000 acres of redwood forest in Mendocino County. BGCSF has been working with San Francisco children in a camping and outdoor education model since 1931. Many of our members have their first experience in a redwood forest, or in any wilderness setting, at Camp Mendocino. During their stay, campers are introduced to the natural world by virtue of the camp’s location in a remote, pristine forest teaming with wildlife, and they gain an appreciation for their surroundings through environmentally-focused activities.
