Big Chico Creek Youth Stream Team Program

The Big Chico Creek Watershed Citizen Monitoring Program links on-going watershed monitoring and restoration efforts with the educational needs of K-12 students through their Big Chico Creek Youth Stream Team Program.

Educational activities utilize research-based experiential learning strategies using the environment as an integrating factor, which are well documented in the literature to enhance student learning and interest. In addition, opportunities for student involvement represent professional research-based assessment and restoration approaches commonly used by resource managers and scientists providing youth an opportunity to work side-by side with college interns and professionals while exploring potential science career pathways.

This mixed peer group interaction enhances youth skills and confidence to participate in resource management decisions.

Specific activities provided are based on their connection to local resource management goals, and ability to provide experiences in varied ecological habitats enhancing student understanding of ecological principles and watershed function.
