Bay Area Wilderness Training

Bay Area Wilderness Training’s (BAWT) mission is to create opportunities for urban and at-risk youth to experience wilderness first hand.  BAWT is a vital, comprehensive and ongoing source of support to agencies that lead youth wilderness trips.  We believe that urban youth, once exposed to wilderness, have a broadened sense of themselves, each other, and the world around them.

BAWT provides training to teachers and other youth development professionals in outdoor and leadership skills.  BAWT then loans the youth workers outdoor gear (free of charge) as well as vans so that they can lead the youth that they work with on life-affirming outdoor environmental education adventures.  BAWT also makes mini-grants to pay for food and transportation related expenses so that the youth workers can get the youth that they serve outdoors.

Grantee Stories

BAWT’s Results - BAWT has leveraged our train-the-trainer model to exponentially increase the number of youth we serve annually and we’re serving more youth than ever before.  In 2008, BAWT helped get 2,082 deserving young people outdoors.  In 2009 our goal was to serve 2,500, but we actually served 3,021. 2009 was also our 10th program year and we served our 10,000th youth.

BAWT has a lot more coming in 2010 - Thanks to support from generous funders like the Stewardship Council, BAWT will:
* Train another 120 adult youth workers through our Wilderness Leadership Training, Camping at the Presidio and brand new Frontcountry Leadership Training programs.
* Get over 3,500 youth outdoors!

Awards Granted
  • 2011 Impact Fund

Bay Area Wilderness Training (BAWT) (Bay Area) was awarded $30,000 for its Frontcountry Leadership Training program. The program provides teachers and youth workers with wilderness skills training; free outdoor equipment libraries; and financial, logistical, and consultative support. This program gives local teachers the skills and equipment they need to provide successful outdoor experiences to their students.

  • 2010 Impact Fund
Front country Leadership Training Program (FLT)

was awarded $35,000 to support new opportunities for at-risk and underprivileged youth to experience the transformative power of wilderness first hand. Through BAWT’s Front country Leadership Training Program (FLT), youth providers and teachers receive wilderness skills training, access a free outdoor equipment library and program support. These leaders in turn engage the youth they work with in powerful outdoor educational experiences through day hikes and overnight camping excursions.

  • 2009 Initiative Fund

$75,000 to create the Front-country Leadership Training (FLT) program, which will leverage the successful Camping at the Presidio (CAP) program to expand access to other Bay Area campgrounds for staff from youth development organizations. FLT will provide training for youth workers, including camp skills training, free camping gear, subsidized transportation, and educational and interpretive resources.
