Born of a partnership between Mills College, the Coalition of Essential Schools, and Oakland Community Organizations, ARISE was created to address the high dropout/pushout rate for students of color in Oakland and to create a national model of a school that effectively sends low-income, first generation students to and through college. ARISE’s students are primarily from low-income families who will be the first in their families to attend college. ARISE students are from a variety of academic backgrounds, from those who have always done well in school to those who have been retained multiple times.
ARISE offers a full University of California approved college preparatory curriculum for students in grades 9-12. In order to provide what our students need to be successful in college, ARISE provides extensive college guidance including activities that focus on the social/emotional side of college preparation. ARISE also features an advisory program, project-based learning curriculum, and an Extended Day program.
